MIAMI -- A 14-year-old boy was apparently stabbed to death in a school bathroom yesterday, and another student was taken into custody.
Other students discovered Jaime Rodrigo Gough in a boys' restroom at Southwood Middle School at about 8:30 a.m.
Miami-Dade Police director Carlos Alvarez said that the boy had suffered "some sort of cutting incident," and that the weapon was found. He would not elaborate.
As of late yesterday afternoon, the student in custody had not been charged.
Other children at the school were locked in their classrooms with their teachers for most of the day as a precaution before they were sent home in the afternoon. More than 150 parents gathered outside.
Antonio Gough, Jaime's uncle, said the teenager was a good student who played baseball, the violin, and the flute. He said his nephew was not a troublemaker.
"The kids have to know what happened to him," Gough said. "I still can't believe this can happen."
Southwood opened in 1976 and specializes in visual and performing arts for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. It has more than 1,500 students.
