SAN FRANCISCO -- The California Supreme Court voted, 5 to 2, to nullify the marriages of nearly 4,000 same-sex couples yesterday, ruling that Mayor Gavin Newsom overstepped his authority when he took the controversial step of approving marriage licenses for gay and lesbian partners.
