Police search for body in 'found girl' slay case

NEW YORK -- Police searched yesterday for the body of a woman whose 4-year-old daughter was found abandoned on a city street, and said they were considering how to tell the girl that her mother is dead. Authorities have been unable to find 26-year-old Monica Lozada-Rivaineira since her daughter was discovered crying and shivering on a street in Queens. Cesar Ascarrunz, 32, was charged Saturday with murdering Lozada-Rivaineira, his live-in girlfriend. (AP)

Suspicious package reroutes road race

A 10-mile road race that had attracted about 20,000 runners grew by a mile yesterday when a suspicious package under a bridge prompted organizers to change the race's route. The Army's annual ''Ten-Miler" road race from Arlington, Va., to Washington and back became an unofficial ''fun run" when a Washington police harbor unit found the package under the 14th Street Bridge, a part of the route. Police determined that the package was harmless. (AP)

Moon found orbiting possible 10th planet

Xena, the possible 10th planet in our solar system, has its own moon, a dim little satellite called Gabrielle, its discoverers have reported. Astronomers at the California Institute of Technology who reported Xena's discovery in July said they detected Xena's sidekick Sept. 10, using the Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, in Hawaii. Their findings will be submitted today to the Astrophysical Journal Letters. (Reuters)

Winds stir concerns in wildfire battles

LOS ANGELES -- Firefighters gained ground yesterday against three wildfires burning across Southern California but worried about a forecast for hot winds. A 1,045-acre fire in Burbank was 67 percent contained after firefighters were aided by cooler breezes overnight. Residents returned to about 70 evacuated homes in Sunset Canyon. But firefighters said they were concerned about a forecast for warmer winds that could bring 50-mile-per- hour gusts and reignite a wildfire on a mountain. (AP)

Immigrant slayings tied to earlier robbery

ELLENTON -- Authorities have linked a string of home invasions that left five Mexican immigrants dead with an armed robbery that occurred last month after reviewing descriptions of weapons used in both crimes. Javier Guzman and Juventino Leon were assaulted in their trailer Sept. 13 by three men who were wielding chrome pistols and baseball bats. The weapons were similar to those used in the south Georgia slayings Friday, authorities said. (AP)
