Heat relief: What the average consumer might do

Carbon dioxide, the biggest contributor to global warming, is emitted when energy is used at home or while traveling. Here are some ways to cut back:

Replace traditional light bulbs with more compact fluorescent bulbs.

Use microwave ovens more. Microwaves use one-third the energy of conventional ovens.

Check for air leaks around the house and seal them. Insulate attics and water heaters.

Recycle more. If more goods are recycled, less energy is used to make new cans and paper. In addition, paper, cardboard, and other organic products produce methane, a strong greenhouse gas, when decaying in landfills.

Lower thermostats in the winter and raise them in the summer. Reducing heating by 2 degrees in the winter can save 6 percent of a household's annual carbon dioxide emissions.

Buy more fuel-efficient cars and appliances.
