Escaped prisoner captured in a closet

ALABAMA
BIRMINGHAM -- An escaped prisoner accused in the videotaped kidnapping of a lawyer who was grabbed at gunpoint outside her loft was captured yesterday. Authorities acting on a tip swarmed an apartment where he was discovered hiding in a closet. Dedrick Griham, 35, was found in Birmingham, about 90 miles north of the state prison from which he escaped Thursday night by cutting through a fence. (AP)

VIRGINA
Men to be admitted to women's college
LYNCHBURG -- Randolph-Macon Woman's College officials announced yesterday that men would be admitted to the 115-year-old institution starting in 2007. The board of trustees said the move would help stabilize the school's finances as interest in all-women schools wanes. But about 400 students, alumnae, and their supporters greeted the announcement by drowning out trustees president Jolley Christman as she tried to explain. (AP)

ILLINOIS
Switch to Macy's draws protesters
CHICAGO -- About 100 protesters marched, carried signs, and called for a boycott yesterday because the Marshall Field's store, the shopper's magnet on State Street for more than a century, had been replaced by a New York icon, Macy's. Meanwhile, hundreds of shoppers lined up two hours early to get gift cards and free coffee and doughnuts. The store is one of about 400 properties nationwide being renamed by Federated Department Stores. (AP)

COLORADO
Air Force to destroy training planes
COLORADO SPRINGS -- The Air Force has decided to destroy its entire fleet of 110 T-3A Firefly training planes, which were grounded in 1997 after crashes that killed six people. The Air Force purchased the British-made, propeller-driven planes for $32 million, and spent $10 million trying to make them airworthy after they were grounded. It decided to junk them rather than try to renovate them. (AP)

TEXAS
Attack submarine is commissioned
GALVESTON -- The USS Texas, the Navy's newest attack submarine, was commissioned at the Port of Galveston yesterday as first lady Laura Bush gave the traditional command: ``Man your ship and bring it to life!" Captain John Litherland and 134 officers and sailors saluted. The nuclear-powered craft is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles. (AP)

WASHINGTON, D.C.
CBS to show `9/11' film on the Web
CBS said yesterday it would carry the documentary ``9/11" on the Internet as well as the airwaves after several affiliates said they would delay or forgo the film because of profanity. It airs tonight in some areas. Also, ABC was reediting i ``The Path to 9/11" miniseries, which begins tonight. Bill Clinton and others have said it inaccurately suggests the former president was inattentive to the Islamic militant threat. (Reuters)
