Mitt Romney is taking his high rollers out to the old ballyard, before he checks their skills on the court.
While the Boston Red Sox play Sunday in San Diego, the Republican presidential contender will gather his biggest fund-raisers for a cookout at Fenway Park.
"Supporters will be treated to tours of Fenway and will be able to enjoy some barbecue at one of Americas oldest and most beloved ballparks," campaign spokeswoman Carolyn Weyforth said.
Matt Romney, one of the former Massachusetts governor's five sons, told supporters in an e-mail yesterday that the campaign was also holding a contest in which other supporters willing to donate $100, as well as write a short essay and answer some Fenway trivia questions, could win an expense-paid trip to attend the cookout.
On Monday, a group expected to number 200 will reconvene at TD Banknorth Garden for a fund-raising drive on the concrete pad that usually bears the home court for the Boston Celtics and the home ice for the Boston Bruins.
A similar "National Call Day" in January raised $6.5 million, a large one-day sum that helped propel Romney to a GOP-leading $21 million in donations during the first three months of the year. The second quarter ends June 30.
Four contributors to Barack Obama's presidential campaign, chosen from among thousands of donors, will sit down for dinner with the Democratic senator from Illinois next month at a restaurant here.
The two men and two women were announced as winners of a small-donor solicitation campaign that was as much about raising money as it was about building a vast network of supporters from across the country who supplied biographical data and gave reasons for their support.
They include Michael Griffith, a miner from Nevada; Margaret Thomas-Jordan, a Louisiana mother of two whose husband is serving a 15-month tour in Iraq; Haile Rivera, a community activist and mentor from the Bronx; and Jennifer Lasko, a Florida firefighter and paramedic who was a registered Republican until 2000.
Obama aides won't say how much money the solicitation raised and would only say that thousands responded to it. The campaign will pay the transportation and dinner costs for the four supporters. (AP)![]()
