AKRON -- A former classmate of the man suspected of killing a pregnant woman was arrested yesterday on an obstruction of justice charge, the FBI said. Myisha Ferrell was charged in connection with the death of 26-year-old Jessie Davis. A medical examiner confirmed that a body found Saturday in a park was that of Davis. The fetus was still in the woman's womb. Bobby Cutts Jr., the suspected father, is charged with two counts of murder. (AP)

'06 donations set a record at $295b
NEW YORK -- Americans gave nearly $300 billion to charitable causes last year, setting a record and besting the 2005 total that had been boosted by a surge in aid to victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, and the Asian tsunami. Donors contributed an estimated $295 billion in 2006, a 1 percent increase when adjusted for inflation, up from $283 billion in 2005, according to a report released today by the Giving USA Foundation. Black enrollment in South is noted
RALEIGH -- For the first time ever in the South, blacks are as well represented on college campuses as they are in the region's population as a whole -- something not yet true of the country overall. The milestone is noted in a book to be released today by the Southern Regional Education Board, a nonprofit group. The terminal was temporarily evacuated, and baggage claim and screening areas were slightly flooded. Forest fire destroys peninsula buildings
ANCHORAGE -- A forest fire that started by sparks from a tool grinder destroyed 35 homes and cabins and 40 other buildings on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage. The blaze, which has blackened more than 80 square miles, was slowed but not stopped by showers yesterday, forestry officials said. An evacuation order was issued for 600 homes.
