  • On Wednesday, declaring Mitt Romney the GOP leader: "I don't care what anybody wants to say, Mitt Romney is now the front-runner. That may not last because this is a very, very fluid situation . . . He has won two primaries. He's come in second in two primaries. He's ahead in the delegate count. You have to say Romney right now is the front-runner!"

  • On Tuesday, criticizing John McCain and Mike Huckabee: "I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys gets the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party, it's going to change it forever, be the end of it. A lot of people aren't going to vote. You watch."

  • On Monday, arguing that McCain and Huckabee can't revive the Reagan coalition: "What is their winning coalition? They don't have one . . . They're pandering to moderates and independents. Folks, I just want you to think about this: What happens if either of these two guys happens to win, attracting the votes of independents, moderates, the Jell-Os, and Democrats? Does that not equal the demise of the Republican Party?"

  • On Dec. 6, praising Romney's closely scrutinized speech on faith and politics: "Frankly, I thought what we saw today, folks, was a Republican candidate for president giving an inspiring speech. It was an inspiring speech about American values, including religion. Mitt Romney did this because he has been relentlessly attacked as something less than a true American. . . . Frankly, this is the kind of thing missing from the campaign. Where are we as a country? Where are we going? What kind of people are we? What binds us together?"
