Voters: 2,246,242 (South Carolina does not register voters by party; voters can vote in the Democratic or Republican primary, but not both).

At stake: 24 delegates (The national party stripped 23 delegates because the state broke party rules when it moved its primary to before Feb. 5).

Polls: John McCain holds a narrow lead over Mike Huckabee, with Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney jockeying for third.
