Sharpton arrested in shooting protest

NEW YORK - The Rev. Al Sharpton was arrested at the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday as he and hundreds of demonstrators blocked traffic to protest the acquittal of three detectives in the 50-bullet shooting of Sean Bell, an unarmed black man on his wedding day. Sharpton, two survivors of the shooting, and the slain man's fiancee were among about a dozen people arrested on disorderly conduct charges near the base of the bridge. Police led away demonstrators at several other bridges and tunnels, part of a coordinated campaign. (AP)

PHILADELPHIA - A police sergeant and five officers were pulled from street duty yesterday after city officials viewed television footage showing a group of officers kicking and punching three suspects during a traffic stop. More than a dozen officers were involved, but Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said investigators were having the videotape enhanced to help determine how many were striking the suspects. Officers said they had seen the suspects shoot three people on a street corner moments earlier. (AP)

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State University has suspended six fraternities after a sweeping drug investigation that landed dozens of students in jail on suspicion of dealing drugs on campus. The investigation was prompted by the cocaine overdose death last year of a freshman sorority member. Ninety-six people were arrested, 75 of them San Diego State students. Agents found cocaine, ecstasy, and three guns at the Theta Chi fraternity, authorities said. Theta Chi and five others have been suspended pending a hearing. (AP)
