NH Edwards delegate announces he's supporting Obama
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. --A New Hampshire Democratic Party delegate who had supported John Edwards says he will support Barack Obama, now that Edwards has endorsed his former political rival for the party's presidential nominee.
Joshua Denton of Portsmouth, 26, an Iraq war veteran, says he thinks that both Obama and Hillary Clinton would be a better president than Republican nominee John McCain. He thinks that Obama is the change the country needs, along with having the best chance of beating McCain in the general election.
"My fear with Hillary was just because she is who she is -- for better or worse -- she would sink, not just lose the presidency," but Democrats in Congress, Denton said Wednesday.
Regarding Edwards, "I liked his populist message and I thought he had the best chance of not just winning, but winning big for the party in both Senate seats and House seats," said Denton, the New Hampshire State Team Captain of VoteVets.org, a veterans advocacy group.
Denton also voted for Edwards in the 2004 New Hampshire primary.
Denton, a district level delegate, is one of four Edwards delegates in New Hampshire. On Wednesday, district level delegate Deborah Bacon-Nelson and at-large delegate Rep. Sharon Nordgren, both of Hanover, said they planned to wait a little longer before making an announcement on whom they'd support. State Sen. Peter Burling, a pledged leader elected official delegate, did not return phone calls seeking comment Wednesday night. ![]()
