Student suspended over pie thrown at NYT columnist

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A Brown University student says she's been suspended for hitting a New York Times columnist with a pie during an Earth Day speech.

Margaree Little was one of two people who heaved green whipped pies at Thomas Friedman because they disagree with his brand of environmentalism.

Little has refused to identify the second person involved. The senior says she's been banned from campus this fall but can petition to be readmitted next spring. The school doesn't comment on student disciplinary matters.

Little faults Friedman because she believes he supports biofuels that reduce the availability of food and displace people in developing nations. Friedman has written about ensuring biodiversity in areas where biofuel crops are grown.
