Officer, 2 deputies shot during chase

ARIZONA
TUCSON - A man was charged with shooting three law enforcement officers who were pursuing him yesterday after he allegedly opened fire at two houses in Tucson, the sheriff's department said. A police officer was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the head. Two sheriff's deputies had injuries that were not life-threatening. The man, who was not immediately identified, allegedly fired at the houses with an assault rifle, but no one was hit. (AP)

McClellan: Bush failed to fire Rove
President Bush broke his promise to the country by refusing to fire aide Karl Rove for leaking a CIA agent's identity, said Scott McClellan, the president's chief spokesman for almost three years. "I think the president should have stood by his word and that meant Karl should have left," McClellan said yesterday during an NBC interview about his book criticizing Bush's leadership. The White House and Rove's lawyer declined to comment. (AP)

FRITCH - What searchers couldn't find, drought helped reveal. Canoeists on receding Lake Meredith in the Texas Panhandle found a small plane that crashed in 1984, the National Park Service said Saturday. The 25-year-old pilot and a passenger died in the crash, according to a report by the National Transportation Safety Board. (AP)

Blood test may find lung cancer early
CHICAGO - A blood test may be able to detect lung cancer in its early stages, which could help improve survival rates, researchers said yesterday. The two-year survival rate is only about 15 percent mainly because the disease is often diagnosed in advanced stages. Preliminary findings of a study done at the University Clinic of Cologne were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. (Reuters)

Man slain in attack on officer's family
NEW YORK - An off-duty officer shot and killed an armed man who grabbed the officer's wife and their 3-year-old daughter in a Bronx elevator, police said. Carlos Rios allegedly followed the woman and girl into an apartment elevator shortly before midnight Saturday. Police said Rios grabbed the two from behind as they were getting out and showed a gun. The off-duty officer heard their screams and ran to their aid. (AP)

Marijuana was for compost, man says
IOWA CITY - Police in Iowa said a man caught with a large quantity of marijuana told them he planned to turn it into compost. The suspect remained in jail yesterday after failing to post $14,000 bail on a charge of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute. (AP)
