THE RACE: The presidential race among registered voters nationally.

------

THE NUMBERS

Barack Obama, 51 percent

John McCain, 36 percent

------

OF INTEREST:

Obama's 15-point lead over McCain in the latest Newsweek poll appears to reflect the "bounce" that observers have been anticipating since the Democrat all but won his party's nomination following the final state primary.

The previous Newsweek poll, a May survey showing Obama and McCain tied at 46 percent, was taken while Obama and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton were still competing for the nomination.

The Newsweek poll was conducted June 18-19 by Princeton Survey Research Associated International. It involved telephone interviews with 896 registered voters nationwide, for whom the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
