Dolly predicted to hit as hurricane
TEXAS
McALLEN - Residents along the Texas-Mexico border were closely monitoring Tropical Storm Dolly as forecasters predicted it would strengthen into a hurricane and make landfall tomorrow. The storm is expected to bring high winds and dump 10 to 20 inches of rain. Emergency officials fear major flooding problems. (AP)IOWA
Storms whip up 100 mph winds
DES MOINES - A line of thunderstorms battered Iowa with winds of up to 100 miles per hour early yesterday, knocking down trees and power lines and cutting electricity to more than 200,000 homes and businesses. No injuries were reported. Damage was minor, but a roof was torn off a building at the state prison for women near Des Moines. A wind speed of 100 miles per hourmph was reported at Dawson. Indian agency lost millions in goods
The Indian Health Service has lost at least $15.8 million worth of equipment and later falsified documents to cover up some of those losses, congressional investigators said yesterday. The 5,000 pieces of lost or stolen equipment included vehicles, electronic equipment, and a computer. Health and Human Services officials disagreed with some of the allegations but said tighter oversight is needed. (AP)CALIFORNIA
SUV driver faces smuggling charge
BRAWLEY - The driver of a sport truck that crashed and killed six illegal immigrants in Southern California has been charged with smuggling, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said yesterday. The crash happened Friday night about 15 miles north of the border near San Diego. The suspect was arrested Sunday in Brawley. Witnesses said 22 Mexicans were in the vehicle.
