2 Philly social workers fired in starvation death

PHILADELPHIA --The city of Philadelphia has fired two social workers charged in the starvation death of a disabled teenager.

The Human Services Department fired Laura Sommerer and Dana Poindexter on Thursday after disciplinary hearings.

They had been suspended with pay after a grand jury report charging them with child endangerment.

Authorities allege they failed to look after 14-year-old Danieal (dan-YELL') Kelly despite reports of abuse. She died of starvation in 2006.

The two will be suspended without pay for a month before being officially dismissed. The agency is investigating seven other suspended employees in the case.
