School district to let teachers bring guns

HOUSTON - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said yesterday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States. The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt. Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said. (Reuters)

HOUSTON - A 3-year-old boy left in his mother's truck in 90-degree heat as she worked her shift at a hospital died, authorities said. The boy's mother told investigators she had forgotten to drop him off at day care. No charges have been filed. (AP)

ALEXANDRIA, La. - A Louisiana teenager who hung nooses off the back of his truck to intimidate a group of black civil rights demonstrators has been sentenced to four months in prison. Federal prosecutors say Jeremiah Munsen, 19, displayed the nooses during a civil rights march in Jena on Sept. 20. (AP)
