Local reaction
A sampling of local reaction to Barack Obama's selection of Joe Biden as his vice presidential nominee:
Senator Edward M. Kennedy: "Barack Obama said he wanted a strong independent leader and a strong advocate for average Americans, and he got one in Joe Biden. He has a deep devotion to his family and his country and an impressive record not only in standing up for American security interests around the world, but for middle-class values and safe neighborhoods here at home."
Senator John F. Kerry: "I have had the privilege of working closely with Joe on the Foreign Relations Committee and have witnessed firsthand his commitment to elevating America's stature in the world. Barack's vision for a better future for America is reflected in Joe's commitment to middle-class issues, understanding of international relations, and duty to country."
Governor Deval Patrick: "I'm excited, this is a ticket for change. . . . He is a leader in foreign policy and foreign relations. He is a pretty funny guy."
Rob Willington, Mass. GOP executive director: "It would be hard to find a harsher critic of Senator Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden. This pick only highlights what the people of Massachusetts are beginning to realize: Barack Obama is not ready to be president."
Mayor Thomas M. Menino: "Senator Obama made a wise choice. Senator Biden is a veteran, he has the foreign policy experience that's needed in these hard foreign policy times. He rounds out the ticket very well. I think Senator Obama made a wise choice, a difficult choice for him, but a wise one that will strengthen his ticket."
Carl Danielson of Cambridge: "I think Joe Biden's a tough cookie, and I think that will be a good match for Barack Obama."
Ted Kottler of Woburn: "The state of Delaware doesn't deliver you too many electoral votes. . . . The bottom line to win the election is that you're going to have to flip one of these red states that always votes Republican and preferably one with more electoral votes."
