National reaction
A sampling of the national reaction to Barack Obama's choice of Joe Biden as his running mate:
Senator Hillary Clinton, a New York Democrat: "Senator Obama has continued in the best traditions for the vice presidency by selecting an exceptionally strong, experienced leader, and devoted public servant."
Senator Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican: "Joe Biden is the right partner for Barack Obama. His many years of distinguished service to America, his seasoned judgment, and his vast experience in foreign policy and national security will match up well with the unique challenges of the 21st century."
Rick Davis, John McCain's campaign manager, in a fund-raising appeal: "Senator Obama's choice in a running mate once again brings up his questionable judgment when faced with making major decisions. . . . Senator Biden has long been a leading critic of Senator Obama's lack of foreign policy experience."
The Rev. Jesse Jackson: "In choosing Joe Biden to join him on the ticket, Barack has struck Olympic gold. I competed against Biden in the '88 campaign. He is a bona fide expert on the judiciary and foreign policy."
Murray Clark, Indiana GOP chairman: "Obama has spent millions on his change message in Indiana. Biden has held on to a seat in the Senate since 1972. How does that represent change?"
Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY's List, a political action committee that supports abortion rights: "Senator Biden's commitment to family will resonate with women voters across this country. "
Joe Solmonese, president of Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights organization: "Senator Obama has chosen a proven and effective advocate for fairness and equality that our entire community can be proud of."
Anna Burger, chairwoman of the Change to Win labor federation: "Joe Biden has been a friend to working Americans throughout his public life, standing up and fighting alongside us for the right to organize, for living wages, for family and medical leave, for safe workplaces, and for a strong Social Security system."
Governor Kathleen Sebelius, a Kansas Democrat considered as a running mate: "His extensive experience dealing with foreign policy issues are an asset in these complicated times."
Senator Evan Bayh, an Indiana Democrat considered as a running mate: "Joe Biden is an outstanding public servant with deep experience and a fighting spirit."
Former senator Sam Nunn, a Georgia Democrat: "I believe that Joe Biden is an excellent choice."
Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee chairman: "Joe Biden is a strong leader, fierce advocate, and devoted family man with values rooted in the best of what America stands for."
