Special election set to fill Detroit mayor's term

DETROIT—The Detroit City Council says a special election will be held next year to fill the balance of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's term.

Kilpatrick leaves office Thursday after pleading guilty to two felonies. The council voted unanimously Tuesday to hold a primary election Feb. 24, followed by another election May 5 between the two top candidates.

The winner will serve through 2009.

It won't be the only mayoral election next year. An election for a new four-year term will be held in November.

The council president, Ken Cockrel Jr., becomes mayor Friday.

Kilpatrick, a Democrat, resigned earlier this month and pleaded guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice. He also pleaded no contest to one count of assault. He will serve four months in jail and five years' probation after an Oct. 28 sentencing.
