Tornadoes kill 2 and damage homes

KENLY - A cluster of strong thunderstorms produced tornadoes in central North Carolina early yesterday, killing two people and destroying at least a half-dozen homes. A woman was found dead amid the rubble that was her home in Kenly, about 35 miles southeast of Raleigh, said State Police spokeswoman Patty McQuillan. In neighboring Wilson County, authorities said a child was killed. Several injuries also were reported. Officials said the severe storm affected a half-dozen counties. (AP)

Ex-worker arrested in triple shooting
SANTA CLARA - Police say they have arrested a man suspected of killing three former co-workers Friday at a Silicon Valley technology company, SiPort Inc. Jing Hua Wu, 47, was arrested yesterday in Mountain View, police said. Police say Wu had been let go this week from his job as a product test engineer. (AP)

Governor warns on climate change
SAN FRANCISCO - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has instructed state agencies to prepare for climate change, especially rising seas, as they replace, upgrade, and repair the pipelines that distribute water to and from treatment plants and low-lying airports. Other jurisdictions, including Florida, Maryland, and New York City, are also looking at the future with an eye toward climate change, but California officials believe this order goes further in calling for studies and actions. Fort Worth diocese breaks from church
NEW YORK - The Diocese of Fort Worth voted yesterday to split from the Episcopal Church, the fourth traditional diocese to do so in a long-running debate over the Bible, gay relationships, and other issues. An umbrella group for those who want to stay with the denomination plans to reorganize the diocese. (AP)
