Correction: Because of a reporting error, a story in the June 7 Ideas section mischaracterized William Morton's 1846 use of ether at Massachusetts General Hospital as the first surgical operation under anesthetic. It was the first such operation to be demonstrated publicly.
Clarification: A Page One story yesterday on Wellesley College's creation of an international studies institute in honor of former secretary of state Madeleine Albright imprecisely described Albright as "offering" her papers to the college. No final decision has been made on whether Albright will donate her papers to the school, as the story elsewhere makes clear. Wellesley and Albright are still in discussions on the matter.
