KANSAS
WICHITA - Abortion opponents have moved their planned memorial service away from the now-shuttered clinic run by slain abortion provider George Tiller. Tiller was gunned down May 31 at his church. Murder and assault charges were filed against Scott Roeder. The National Organization for Women said abortion rights supporters planned to confront Operation Rescue during its prayer vigil at the clinic yesterday. Instead, abortion opponents said they would place flowers at a local hospital and near their headquarters. (AP)

Timely sentencing sought for Madoff
A judge should not delay Bernard Madoff’s sentencing even though investigators have yet to determine how much money investors lost in the disgraced financier’s multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme, prosecutors said. A fragmentary record of the activities of Madoff’s firm has delayed efforts to identify each victim and losses, prosecutors said in court filings Friday. Reconstructing the record is likely to take several more months, but should not delay Madoff’s June 29 sentencing, they argued. They requested a 90-day extension beyond the sentencing for the court to take up the issue of restitution. (AP)
