GOP says Sotomayor review needs time
WASHINGTON - Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell says the Senate Judiciary Committee needs more time to review records in connection with Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court nomination.
McConnell said that in the past few days some 300 boxes of materials have turned up from Sotomayor’s years as a lawyer with a legal advocacy group, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. McConnell told “Fox News Sunday’’ that the committee needs time to go through the boxes.
Confirmation hearings for Sotomayor, who is a federal appeals court judge, are set to begin July 13.
Republicans have complained that the hearings for Sotomayor are taking place too soon. Democrats say the schedule is in keeping with hearings for recent Supreme Court nominees.
