HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. - A private suburban Philadelphia swim club accused of racism after it canceled the memberships of dozens of minority children says it will seek a meeting to work out an agreement for the children to return.

Member Amy Goldman said those at a hastily called meeting at The Valley Club of Huntingdon Valley voted yesterday to reinstate the memberships of Creative Steps and two other day camps if safety issues, times, and terms can be agreed upon.

The 65 mostly black and Hispanic children were to swim once a week at the gated club in a village straddling two overwhelmingly white townships. But camp director Alethea Wright said several children reported hearing racial comments and the camp’s money was refunded.

The swim club says the allegations are untrue. It says overcrowding was the problem.

The state Human Relations Commission is investigating.
