JOPLIN — The death toll from the monster tornado that devastated Joplin rose to at least 139 yesterday, and state officials said 100 people are still missing. Overall, tornadoes killed 523 people so far in 2011, making it the deadliest year for tornadoes since 1950. A teenager believed to have been ejected or sucked from a vehicle in the massive tornado last week on the way home from graduation has been found dead in a pond near the truck, a member of his family said yesterday. Woman, 30, dies in fall from hotel ATLANTA — A 30-year-old woman died on her birthday and another woman was seriously injured when they plunged from a hotel window early yesterday morning. Witnesses told police that 30-year-old Lashawna Threatt and a second woman were “play wrestling’’ in a room at the W Midtown Hotel around 3:15 a.m. when they crashed into a window and fell four or five stories onto a slanted glass ceiling above a sunroom. Charge for rude gesture dropped DENVER — A harassment charge has been dropped in the case of a 35-year-old Colorado man who faced prosecution for displaying his middle finger to a State Patrol trooper, officials said. The American Civil Liberties Union had argued that while the gesture may have been rude, it amounted to protected free speech. According to the ACLU, Shane Boor received a criminal summons for allegedly making the gesture while passing a trooper in his car. (AP)

Boy, 4, mauled to death by dog NEW YORK — A 4-year-old boy was fatally mauled by a pit bull yesterday when the dog, which had been feared by neighbors, suddenly attacked him in his Brooklyn home. Jayelin Graham suffered wounds to his head, neck, and torso. (AP)
