ATLANTA—An attorney for workers who sued over the collapse of an elevated walkway under construction in the treetops at the Atlanta Botanical Garden says settlements totaling more than $15 million have been reached in the case.

A portion of the Canopy Walk collapsed in December 2008, dropping construction workers up to 40 feet to the ground. One worker was killed and 18 others were injured, some with brain and spinal injuries.

Lawsuits were filed in a local court against the Botanical Garden and seven construction companies.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports ( http://bit.ly/nJtboj) Law said Tuesday the Botanical Garden hired reputable contractors and was insured.

Mary Pat Matheson, the garden's' executive director, says she's pleased by the settlements at hand.
