PHILADELPHIA—A federal judge says a former high-ranking member of the Philadelphia Police Department can remain free on bail until next month, denying a request by federal prosecutors who said he made intimidating statements toward his accuser and an FBI informant.
The Philadelphia Inquirer ( http://bit.ly/oLHwJG) reports U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III on Tuesday denied the government's request that former Inspector Daniel Castro be jailed immediately.
Following his sentencing last week, Castro called himself a victim and held up pictures of the informant and a former business associate he pleaded guilty to plotting to shake down for $90,000 over a failed real estate deal.
Castro's lawyer argued his client was entitled to express his feelings.
Castro is to begin his five-year sentence on November 15.
