HUGO, Okla.—Hollis Earl Roberts, a former chief of the Choctaw Nation, has died at age 68.

Mt. Olive Funeral Home in Hugo says Roberts died Wednesday.

Roberts became chief of the tribe in 1978 after the death of Chief David Gardner. His term ended in 1997 when he was convicted of two counts of abusive sexual contact and one count of aggravated sexual abuse involving two female employees of the tribe.

Before becoming chief, Roberts served as a Hugo city councilman and six years as a state representative.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday at the Choctaw County Agriplex Building in Hugo.
