SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern has been released from a South Dakota hospital where he was being treated for exhaustion.

In a statement released by the hospital Thursday, McGovern said he feels good and plans to return to work. He had been admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital over the weekend.

The 89-year-old former U.S. senator has been on a lecture tour and recently returned from Europe.

Hospital spokeswoman Julie Ward says doctors report McGovern is doing well and will continue to improve.

McGovern ran for president against incumbent Richard Nixon in 1972 and lost in a historic landslide.

McGovern has said he will stay in Sioux Falls with his daughter Ann McGovern before returning to Florida. He has lived in St. Augustine, Fla., since 2008.
