TUCSON, Ariz.—Lawyers for the suspect in the shooting that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords are objecting to any requirement that defense experts be videotaped as they assess their client's competency.

Prosecutors said last week that they want copies of all video-recorded interviews of Jared Lee Loughner as experts try to determine whether he's fit to stand trial.

In a filing Monday night, Loughner's attorneys say any requirement that defense experts be videotaped violates the suspect's constitutional rights and invades "attorney-client and work product privileges."

Loughner has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges stemming from the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson that killed six people and wounded 12 people besides Giffords.

He's being forcibly medicated with psychotropic drugs at a Missouri prison in an effort to make him mentally ready for trial.
