Weekly US oil and gas rig count drops by 7

HOUSTON—The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. dropped by seven this week to 1,993.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, North Dakota and Oklahoma each gained one rig.
Colorado and Texas each lost four rigs, Louisiana lost two, and New Mexico and Pennsylvania each lost one. Alaska, Arkansas, California, West Virginia and Wyoming were unchanged.
The rig count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. A low of 488 was recorded in 1999.![]()
