Longtime Alaska guide charged with smuggling
ANCHORAGE, Alaska—An Alaska river guide has been accused of helping a client smuggle a 10,000-year-old mammoth fossil out of Alaska.
The Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/uvJR4m) reported Friday that Karen Jettmar is charged with conspiracy and removing paleontological resource from federal land. Both are felonies.
Jettmar is author of "The Alaska River Guide" and director of Equinox Wilderness Expeditions.
She is accused of guiding a person on a June 2007 river trip on the Kokolik River in Northwest Alaska during which an indictment says they removed a mammoth tusk valued at about $4,000.
The indictment says Jettmar talks in one e-mail to the client about a river in Alaska that would be good for hauling "booty back."
Jettmar did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press at her company.
