Group clarifies position on US treatment of Saleh
NEW YORK—The Human Rights Watch is clarifying its position on the embattled Yemeni president Ali Abdulla Saleh getting medical treatment in the United States.
The New York-based human rights organization, which says it has documented the deaths of hundreds of anti-government protesters in confrontations with Saleh's security forces, says it is not opposed to Saleh receiving care in the United States. However, it wants assurances that concerned governments will insist on prosecution for those responsible for last year's attacks.
The group had earlier said it was "appalling" that Saleh would get first-rate treatment in the U.S. while hundreds of Yemeni victims are not getting proper medical care or justice.
Saleh arrived in the United States on Saturday for treatment of burns he suffered during an assassination attempt in June.
