Documents: Accused Pa. priest kept in parishes
PHILADELPHIA—Catholic church documents read in court Tuesday show two deceased Philadelphia archbishops moved a troubled priest to new parishes despite dire warnings he was sexually abusing children.
The records show Cardinal John Krol moved the late Rev. Peter Dunne to a Warminster parish in 1987, after a therapist warned that he be supervised around children.
And Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua assigned him to a northeast Philadelphia parish in 1989 -- after the therapist called Dunne a pedophile and ticking time bomb.
Lawyers for Monsignor William Lynn note that at least three other church officials knew of the diagnosis. Yet Dunne remained an active priest until his 1994 retirement -- and was never defrocked.
Lynn, Bevilacqua's secretary for clergy, has pleaded not guilty to child-endangerment and conspiracy charges. No other church officials have been charged.![]()
