In his op-ed column Saturday, Derrick Z. Jackson wrote about the need for more bike trails in Massachusetts and described a scene he encountered on the Fox River Trail near downtown De Pere, Wis.:

"As I jogged across the downtown bridge over a section of the Fox River, I was blinded by scores of massive, shimmering American white pelicans perched on rocks and zooming above with wingspans of up to 9 feet."
