During a ceremony on June 29, 1990 at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Mr. Vonnegut glanced down at his daughter Lilly, who was 7 at the time.

Mr. Vonnegut received an honorary degree from the University of Chicago in 1971 in recognition of the "anthropological elements." Twenty-four years earlier, the University had rejected his master's thesis.
