A small but celebratory crowd of spectators called for beads from social club Krewe du Vieux members during the first of the major Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans Saturday.

Despite the widespread destruction in the city by Hurricane Katrina, officials decided to allow a scaled-back Mardi Gras celebration this year.
