Alito tries to temper his '85 opposition to a right to abortion

WASHINGTON -- Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito Jr. sought yesterday to distance himself from his 1985 comment that the Constitution does not protect a right to abortion, by telling Democratic senators that he made the statement while he was seeking a ''political job" two decades ago.
