Education: Bachelor's degree from College of William & Mary, 1965; master's from Indiana University, 1966; PhD from Georgetown University, 1974.

Military service: Air Force, 1966-68.

Experience:

1966-74: Intelligence analyst and intelligence officer, Central Intelligence Agency.

1974-79: On staff of the National Security Council.

1979-82: Various positions, including officer for national intelligence, CIA.

1983-86: Chairman of the National Intelligence Council.

1986-89: Acting director and deputy director, CIA.

1991-1993: Director of CIA.

1996: Wrote "From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War."

1999-2001: Interim dean, Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University.

2002-present: President, Texas A&M University .
