US backs down on Belarus embassy closure
WASHINGTON—U.S. officials say the United States has reversed a decision to order the closure of the Belarusian embassy in Washington and its consulate in New York.
The officials tell The Associated Press that the State Department on Thursday was to have notified Belarus of the step, which had been approved by Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, but that they were instructed at the last minute not to do so.
The State Department says it is still considering a full range of options to retaliate against Belarus for expelling most of the U.S. embassy staff in Minsk.![]()
