House panel drops demands for some info in probe
WASHINGTON—A House committee is dropping demands for some of the information it has been seeking about a flawed gun-smuggling probe, a day after Attorney General Eric Holder offered to meet with Republicans and work toward a compromise.
The Justice Department and Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have been locked in a battle that focuses on a congressional subpoena for records about the gun-smuggling operation along the Southwestern border.
The House panel on Wednesday dropped demands for information regarding the roles of senior Justice Department officials in Operation Fast and Furious.
The Justice Department called the move a positive step. The committee chaired by California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa still wants records about Justice Department discussions last year over how to respond to the congressional investigation.
