On March 29, Gonzales's chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, told lawmakers that the attorney general had met five times about the firings of the prosecutors. Sampson's testimony contradicted earlier comments from Gonzales that he was not aware of the effort.

Another Justice aide closely involved in dismissals, Monica Goodling, Gonzales's White House liaison, has stepped down, leaving her position on April 6.
