On May 14 Deputy Attorney General Paul McNaulty said he would resign as the furor over the eight fired attorneys continued.
Although McNaulty did not mention the firings in his resignation letter, aides said he stepped down partially in anger over being linked to the firings. McNaulty had also drawn Gonzales's ire in weeks prior to his resignation by testifying to the Senate that one of the dismissed attorneys had been removed for a protege of Karl Rove. |
