THE TROOP SURGE
"If we increase our support at this crucial moment, and help the Iraqis break the current cycle of violence, we can hasten the day our troops begin coming home." - Jan. 10, 2007
After nearly four years and the deaths of more than 3,000 American troops, Bush by the end of 2006 came to see that his strategy in Iraq was failing badly. Bush chose to double down on his initial gamble to invade and agreed to deploy about 30,000 additional troops.
Many believe the additional troops quelled violence and brought a greater stability to the country.
