Mary Schapiro, a Securities and Exchange Commission veteran, was the chief executive of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the largest nongovernmental regulatory organization for all securities firms doing business in the United States.

Her appointment comes at a time when Obama is calling for more economic regulation.
