Solicitor general

Elena Kagan, dean of the Harvard Law School, will be the new solicitor general, Obama's transition office announced.

She will represent the federal government in cases argued before the Supreme Court. Solicitor general is a post that is often a stepping stone to a Supreme Court nomination.
