Theodore B. Olson, a former solicitor general, was also among the names mentioned as a possible replacement for Gonzales.

Olsen served under President Ronald Reagan as assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel from 1981 to 1984, and successfully represented President Bush and Vice President Cheney before the Supreme Court in the Bush v. Gore cases involving the 2000 presidential election.
