Richard Holbrooke Dec. 13 Holbrooke, President Obama's special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, died at 69 after suffering a torn aorta. The Associated Press described him as 'a brilliant and feisty US diplomat who wrote part of the Pentagon Papers, (and) was the architect of the 1995 Bosnia peace plan.'
