If you heard millions of women around the world suddenly scream out in anguish Saturday, there’s no cause for alarm. Well, unless you were trying to get with George Clooney.

Ladies took to social media to express their shock, outrage or despondent depression over the news Clooney was now engaged to 36-year-old Amal Alamuddin, a Beirut-born lawyer who specializes in human rights and international law.

Update: April 28, 10:53 a.m.: Alamuddin’s law firm confirmed the engagement Monday in a congratulatory statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As for the worldwide reaction, the tone ranged from resigned acceptance…

...to full-blown panic...

...and even schadenfreude.

Others found security in denial, the first step of the grieving process.

And a handful were merely inconvenienced:

There may be hope yet—for what it’s worth, Clooney’s representatives have so far declined to publicly confirm or deny the news.
